Cell Phones for Soldiers is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to providing cost-free communication services and emergency funding to active-duty military members and veterans. The charity was founded in 2004, by then 12 and 13-year-old Robbie and Brittany Bergquist in their small town of Norwell, Massachusetts. After hearing a news story about a soldier serving in Afghanistan who had accrued an $8,000 cell phone bill while calling home to his loved ones, the siblings decided to jump into action. Through car washes and bake sales they were able to not only pay off the bill, but raise enough awareness to launch a campaign to support military members across the state. Since that initial call to action in 2004, Cell Phones for Soldiers has adopted a cell phone recycling program that generates a profit in order to purchase prepaid calling cards which are sent to active duty military members. Through the charities more than 4,000 drop off locations, the program has been able to raise over $14 million and keep more than 14 million cell phones out of landfills. The ability to hear a loved one’s voice is an invaluable moment that allows the service member to hear what and whom they are fighting for The means of communication while in the middle of a war zone have been deemed ‘A Lifeline’. The ability to hear a loved one’s voice is an invaluable moment that allows the service member to hear what and whom they are fighting for. Since 2004, Cell Phones for Soldiers has been able to provide more than 220 million Minutes That Matter. These are minutes spent hearing a child’s voice or saying ‘I love you’ to a spouse. In one case, the charity received an email from a Gold Star mother who informed us that our phone cards were the final conversation she had with her son. Cell Phones for Soldiers is proud to provide a Lifeline to America’s Bravest. Shannon Hill is a Senior Vice President for KBS, overseeing over 2.2 million square feet in the northeast U.S.
